Procedures for students
Procedure to be recognised as a student with fewer opportunities
Procedure to be recognised as a student with a disability
What is the procedure to be recognised as a student with a disability?
If you have a disability or health condition for which you require support, you are strongly encouraged to speak to a Disability Inclusion Adviser about your support needs at the earliest opportunity.
Our ambition as a University is to become as inclusive as possible. That will mean that, as much as we can, we look to make sure support is available without you needing to apply for additional funding.
As a first step while you settle into your new course and as we get to know you, we will normally look to match whatever support you have had at school or college. If you have had a support plan in the past, it is always helpful if you can bring that to your first meeting with one of our Advisers.
This first meeting is important, even if you have included information on your UCAS or direct entry application form, or you have mentioned your difficulties to an academic member of staff. We can help you look ahead, predict any difficulties you might experience because of how your course is taught and assessed – or because of how Edinburgh Napier operates generally – and take steps to help you avoid any of those problems.
Please note that support, including exam adjustments, are only put in place once you have discussed and agreed them with an Adviser in the Disability Inclusion Team.
Please email at [email protected] so we can start to work with you.
Necessary documents to provide
It is helpful if you share with us your support plan from your most recent school, college or university. We will normally look to match the support you have received so far.
It can also be helpful if you can share with us evidence of your diagnosis, such as an educational psychologist's report or a doctor's letter.
What can students expect?
Arranging an appointment and/or talking to an Adviser
If you already have an Advisor asigned, you will be able to book an appointment by visiting myfuture.napier.ac.uk
Log on to MyFuture, click on Appointments at the top of the screen and then select your Advisor from the drop-down list. Their appointments calendar will then appear and you can select a date and time that suits you.
If you do not already have an Adviser assigned, please email [email protected] to request an initial appointment.
Telephone and video call appointments are available
We always try to respond promptly to enquiries and minimise waiting times. However, there will be inevitable delays during busy periods, especially at the start of the academic year. It is always best to make contact with us as early as possible if your support needs are significant, for instance if you require specific reasonable adjustments to teaching materials or accommodation, specialist equipment or BSL interpreter, all of which can take a lengthy period to discuss and arrange.
Exam support
Your Learning Profile (support plan) will include any agreed exam and assessment allowances. Where exam support has been approved, such as extra time, this should cover both formal examinations and any local ‘programme’ based tests. Exam allowances will be co-ordinated centrally for any formal exams. For programme-based exams, practical tests, etc, your lecturer and SDC will normally be responsible.
There are deadlines for getting approved exam allowances in place each Trimester for the University’s formal examinations. Allowances will not normally be agreed after the deadline date other than in exceptional circumstances. The deadline date is advertised on My Napier well in advance each trimester.
Find out more about Exam Adjustments
Students who think they may require exam support are advised to contact an Adviser before the deadline date, ideally early in the Trimester.
Loan equipment or software
The Library has a bank of loan laptops which can be borrowed for a week at a time. The Disability Inclusion Team also has a bank of technology and equipment available for loan. We may be able to let students borrow software or equipment on short to medium term loans. Please contact [email protected] for further information.
Using technology support
The University has developed a range of technology support options and other useful support tools and information. Students are strongly encouraged to find out about and make use of any technology or software relevant to your difficulties, for example; mind mapping programmes and software to proof read, spell and grammar check your work and read information to you. The Study Tools category in AppsAnywhere is your starting point to access specialist software on and off campus.
Information can be found via the Technology section
Information, training and tutorials on using software is available. Please contact [email protected] for further information.
The University desktop and all standard University networked software can now be accessed remotely so you can use it anywhere with your own PC, laptop or tablet so long as you have an internet connection. Visit our IT Support pages for more information on the Virtual Desktop Service.
What to do if you have any queries or things go wrong
The Disability Inclusion Team are dealing with support arrangements for hundreds of students on an annual basis. Although the majority of these arrangements generally work well, occasionally things do not go as smoothly as we might wish.
Please let us know of any difficulties at an early stage – it is much easier for us to address any issues as soon as they arise, rather than leaving them until the end of a Trimester or Academic Year.
Your Adviser in the Disability Inclusion Team should be the first point of contact for any issues or queries you may have about support and we will respond to your queries and try to resolve any complaints informally and as soon as possible.
