Procedures for students

Procedure to be recognised as a student with fewer opportunities

The Equal Opportunities and Diversity Unit (https://www.chancengerechtigkeit.uni-bonn.de/en/diversity/studying/studying?set_language=en) is in the process of setting up a counselling network due to the intersectional entanglement of different discrimination dimensions. Students with fewer opportunities receive advice and support here:

Procedure to be recognised as a student with a disability

In the course of their studies, students with health impairments frequently encounter obstacles in completing the required coursework and examinations (such as exams, presentations or assignments). Here, students with health impairments have the opportunity to obtain modified framework conditions in terms of time or form by applying for disadvantage compensation. However, an application for compensation for a disadvantage only has a chance of success if the student admits to his/her own impairments to the examination board, examination office, examiners or other authorized bodies, describes the effects in a comprehensible manner and submits the reasons, evidence and proof required in each individual case.

Before submitting an application, individual counselling - by the Disability Officer and/or the relevant subject-specific study advisory service - is strongly recommended, as this can increase your chances of obtaining compensation for disadvantages.

Further informations about subject-specific study advisory services can be found here: https://www.uni-bonn.de/en/studying/consultation-and-service/subject-specific-study-advisory-service?set_language=en

A current (= not older than 6 months) specialist certificate from the treating specialist or (registered/registered) psychotherapist confirming your information in medical terms (but comprehensible to a medical layperson) and approving or recommending the requested measure(s) - if applicable with a corresponding recommendation for the scope of the disadvantage compensation.

Diagnostic tests (e.g., for dyslexia/dyscalculia) - if applicable - should be not more than 5 years old and preferably study-related. A severely disabled person's certificate can - if available - also be enclosed, but is not absolutely necessary for the disadvantage compensation and is often not sufficient to prove the specific examination-relevant disability.

It is possible to apply for compensation for a disadvantage. Compensation for disadvantages in studies are measures to compensate for difficulties in the course of studies and in examinations caused by impairments and thus to ensure equal opportunities; they are not awarded across the board, but always individually and situation-related and depend, for example, on the effects of the impairment and the respective field of study.

Activities

Preparatory visits

If it is possible for the international students to visit in advance (or alternatively, if relatives/acquaintances are in Bonn or can come to Bonn), an appointment for a joint visit can be arranged in consultation with the respective academic advisor and the Representative for Students with disabilities and chronic illness. General questions can, of course, also be discussed by phone or via Zoom; however, it is better to ask the student advisors directly, as they usually know the local and programme-specific conditions better.

Further informations about subject-specific study advisory services can be found here: https://www.uni-bonn.de/en/studying/consultation-and-service/subject-specific-study-advisory-service?set_language=en

And please contact the International Office well in advance

Preparatory visits to get to know the university's infrastructure and check accessibility. In addition, there is the possibility of a counselling interview on the support options for students with disabilities
