Procedure to be recognised as a student with fewer opportunities

Procedure to be recognised as a student with a disability

Students with disabilities that significantly reduce his/her ability to show actual knowledge in different test situations should be given the opportunity to receive extended amount of time on examinations or to accomplish examinations at an adapted but corresponding level. The purpose should be to give the student the possibility to be judged based on his/her actual knowledge. The student holds the responsibility to inform the study counsellor of the programme about the disability and to supply documents. The student also holds the responsibility to inform the coordinator of clinical practice and work training about the disability.

- The student should submit a certificate that confirms the disability and the need of special support at least one month before the course begins. 

- The certificate should be issued by a doctor and contain a description of the difficulties to guide Åland University of Applied Sciences in the process of supporting and giving adequate help. 

- The certificate cannot be more than five years old and should be written to meet high school- or university level of education. 

Students with special needs have, as far as possible, the right to receive adapted tutoring and examinations, with regard to the student´s disability and possibility to achieve the learning content in curriculum for courses and programmes. This procedure is applicable for both local and international students

Adjustments for students with disabilities

  • May bring a note taker to educational activities
  • May bring a personal assistant to educational activities
  • May bring a Sign Language interpreter to the educational activities
  • May request adjusted courses materials: size, font and font size, braille, etc.
  • May request the course material in digital format
  • May request to record lectures
  • May use a laptop, tablet or iPad during lectures
  • May use elevators and other access facilities on campus
  • May bring a personal assistant to the exam for practical help at the beginning and end of the exam
  • May bring a Sign Language interpreter to oral exams
  • May take a seat in separate exam room for written exams
  • May take more preparation time before the oral exam
  • May take more time for the written exam

The study counsellor and the affected teacher can, together with the student and with support from the doctor’s notes, approve to following pedagogic measures to compensate for limitations of function in the study situation: 

  • opportunity to use student literature adapted for people with reading or/and writing disabilities (the university library will assist)
  • individual exam (if needed by computer)
  • oral exam instead of written
  • extended time to write exams
  • access to copies of teachers´ presentations and lecture notes
  • lecture notes from other students (who are compensated by ÅUAS)
  • extra tutoring with support tutor

If any of the support measurements mentioned above have economic consequences, the study counsellor will discuss the question with the vice-rector. 

Practical arrangements

  • The study counsellor should together with the affected teacher arrange practical assistance, such as help with lecture notes, extra tutoring and special exam situations. 
  • The IT-department assists with PC for individual exam.
  • Individual exam is organized together with the Open University.
  • Oral exam is organized by ÅUAS and is documented by the invigilator. 
  • The study counsellor informs the student about adapted literature and asks him/her to contact the university library.
