Procedures for students

Procedure to be recognised as a student with fewer opportunities

This institution has not provided information about how to be recognised as a student with fewer opportunities.

Procedure to be recognised as a student with a disability

The student can contacts the dean of disabilities. He/she can be encouraged to do so by, for example, the study career counsellor or mentor. During the intake interview, the student's disability and what he/she needs to do to make the study proceed smoothly (tailor-made) is discussed.

This depends on the disability the student is dealing with. For example, in the case of dyslexia, a dyslexia statement is required.

At Driestar educatief, we believe it is important that participation in our educational activities in general, and participation in international activities and mobility/programmes, is made possible for ALL our students and staff.  We have the following incentives to assure these principles:

•  We endorse Article 21 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

•  We comply with the Sustainable Development Goal, specifically goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

•  In accordance with the Dutch law we comply with non-discrimination objectives.

•  We have signed the code of conduct for International Student Higher Education.

•  We comply with the five ambitions based on a shared ambition (universities in the Netherlands) to improve student welfare, Attention to inclusive higher education study climate, Complete and easily accessible information provision, Intensified financial support, Institution specific organisation, Continuous attention to competence.

•  We have a designated tutor/study advisor who makes special and tailor-made arrangements for disabled people or students/staff with special needs or learning difficulties (Student Welfare Department).

•  We have internal bylaws and a quality system for non-discrimination objectives, which guarantees compliance (student charter, complaints procedure, etc.).

•  We are an institute that stands for high social cohesion and offer internal and external counselling for students and staff.

•  Our student council/body, which is represented by a number of students from various departments, keeps a close eye on the compliance of our vision and strategy also in this matter.

• We have developed different learning and teaching techniques to include all students (also blended mobility).

Our programmes are open to all students and colleagues in our institution. We do not charge extra fees for incoming students and they have the same access to services and facilities as our local students. All students and staff are treated equally in academic and in-service matters.  We pay close attention to mobile participants (in- and outbound). One advantage of the institution's small size is it guarantees a personal treatment for our (potential) participating students/staff.

This institution has not provided information about if the procedure applies for both local and international students

Confidential counselling

Driestar Christian University for Christian Education wants to provide its students with a safe learning and working environment. Every student therefore has a right to protection from behaviour that is experienced as undesirable. For that reason there is an opportunity within Driestar Christian University to speak to an internal or external counsellor. The counsellor will listen to your story and discuss how you want to continue and which action you, Driestar Christian University or someone else can undertake to stop the undesirable behaviour, without causing further suffering to yourself. The counsellor can also refer you to other support inside or outside of Driestar University if you wish. The information and details mentioned during the counselling session will always be treated as confidential.

The counsellors also deal with advice on and prevention of undesirable behaviour.

The counsellors are: Ms. E.J. Gardebroek (external), Ms. L.F. van Hartingsveldt (internal) and Mr. D. van den Noort (internal). They are also the appointed counsellors for any issues regarding aggression and sexual intimidation.

Individual counselling

It can happen that a student is going through a difficult time in his or her life due to several factors in (psychological) health, family situation and/or other personal circumstances. Of course the student guidance counsellor would be the first person appointed to support the student in such a situation, but sometimes it is good to receive more intensive support.

It is therefore possible to attend a number of consultations around individual guidance. Ms. E. v.d. Werfhorst and Ms. L.F. van Hartingsveldt can be approached for this. Their methods of working and their approaches are diverse and the student can ask them about it. Both offer short-term support for issues mentioned above to help the student continue or complete their study programme. Note: this is not formal psychological counselling. In case of more serious issues they will refer the student.

Housing support

Gouda is an attractive student city: a great place to study and live. And what better place for a student to live than close to school and the train station? Our student accommodation at Burgemeester Jamessingel has room for over 120 students. The building has 11 floors, each with 11 residences and a communal area.

Our student housing is a friendly community. The residents eat, learn, laugh, discuss, sing and play sports together.

Accessible services are both on the first and second floor, there are apartments reserved for disabled students,  in all our facilities we do have an elevator etc.

Additional services

This institution does not provide additional support appart of those listed above.

Activities

Preparatory visits

The student can contact Student Affairs. By mail, the dean responsible for the department in which the student wants to study will then make an appointment for an orientation meeting.

With the student, the possibility of studying at Driestar University of Applied Sciences is examined. If necessary, contact will be made with the Examination Board prior to the study. During the discussion, it should become clear what the student needs and what the university can offer.

Welcoming activities

We offer welcome events for students. Since we are a small university there is lots of attention for each student need (tailor-made programmes).

Our support for incoming students/staff is as follows:

• The International Office offers support in the areas of accommodation, visa applications, insurances and organisational preparations.

•  If needed, we provide a shuttle service from and to the airport or train station for incoming visitors.

•  We provide an introduction programme consisting of an introductory meeting with the International Office, in which we provide information about the institution, the programme and options for social interactions. In addition,  visitors are introduced to the (teaching) team, their tutor and fellow students. The visitors are made familiar with the institution so that they know who to turn to with questions.

•  We link a buddy to the incoming student (to encourage their social network).

•  We arrange excursions, to facilitate their integration.

• There are interviews on a regular basis with the supervisor and the International Office to assess their stay and the programme.

•  Prior to departure, an exit interview takes place to assess the period of mobility and to bring the period of mobility to conclusion.
