Procedure to be recognised as a student with fewer opportunities

Howest study coaches can help you with the application for a special statute and the accompanying adjustments. This assistance can help you to follow your study programme in way  as comfortable as possible. Under ‘adjustments’, you will find information on the application procedure, the substructure, the certificates, the attestations and the adjustments.

The staff of the student services department respects your privacy. For your registration for student support services, data are collected and processed from you. All information on which data is processed and how we handle this correctly can be found here.

Howest aims to make its academic offering available to the widest possible population and offers its students every opportunity to develop.

Every person is unique. Howest recognises and values differences and pursues a diversity policy aimed at evolving from integrated to inclusive, complemented by a target group policy.

  • Language remediation programmes in cooperation with adult education centres;
  • Specific actions for refugees: diploma equivalence and language remediation;

  • Peer Assisted Learning: senior students coach new students in acquiring academic skills or updating learning material;
  • Specific actions for incoming students: buddy project, renting bicycles at student prices, support during the search for accommodation, ...
  • Specific actions for students with special statutes:
    • Teaching and examination facilities;
    • Guidance and support according to the feasibility of studies;
    • Additional support;
    • Adapted learning resources – financial support by the Cell Specific Educational Resources;
    • Pedagogical assistance - VAPH financial assistance ;
    • (adapted) transportation to and from classes – VAPH assistance;
    • (adapted) accommodation in the in-house accommodation (adapted rooms and parking);
    • Compensatory software.
  • Howest Community Service Learning: students commit to initiatives focused on needs within Howest - buddy&mind: taking up an informal role as 'peer supporter';
  • Awareness campaigns such as: mental health week, week against sexual violence and sexually transgressive behaviour between students.

  • May move the exams to the appropriate catch-up exam period within the same exam period
  • May take a seat in separate exam room for written exams
